GES Stops Document Demands for Salary Adjustments

Newly promoted teachers have been told not to submit applications for salary adjustments.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed newly promoted teachers not to submit application letters, promotion letters or other documents for salary adjustments to reflect their new ranks. The directive follows concerns raised by some teachers that they had been instructed to submit the documents as part of the process for adjusting their salaries after promotion.

In a statement issued on August 22, 2026, the GES said the practice of automatically placing teachers on the appropriate salary scale after promotion remains in force and has not changed. “Teachers who are promoted to new ranks are usually placed automatically on the appropriate salary scale to reflect the new ranks,” the Service said. It consequently advised teachers to ignore any request to submit documents for salary adjustments, indicating that such submissions are not required under the existing arrangement.

The Service said it was aware that some regions and districts were allegedly requesting newly promoted teachers to provide documents before their salaries could be adjusted. Management said it was engaging the affected regions and districts to address the issue and ensure that the established procedure is followed. It also appealed to teachers to remain calm while those engagements continue. The clarification is intended to prevent confusion among newly promoted teachers and ensure that the salary adjustment process follows the established administrative system.

Under the GES arrangement, promotion to a new rank ordinarily results in placement on the corresponding salary scale without the teacher having to initiate a separate application for the adjustment. The latest directive therefore means newly promoted teachers are not expected to incur additional administrative procedures by submitting promotion documents solely for the purpose of securing salary adjustments.

The GES has therefore urged teachers to disregard contrary instructions requesting such documentation and await the implementation of their new salary placement through the normal process.
