Debrah’s Tearful Apology to Pentecost Church

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, broke down in tears as he tendered an apology to the Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, over controversial remarks made by the CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mary Awusi. According to #3NewsGH, the apology was delivered during a thanksgiving service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre Trassaco on Sunday, April 26, where Debrah described Awusi’s comments as a “slip” and appealed for forgiveness on behalf of the government.

Debrah emphasized that several government officials, including himself, are members of the Church of Pentecost, stressing that Awusi’s comments were not intended to undermine the church’s leadership. “Forgive us, it was just a slip, it wasn’t intentionally done to malign our church,” he pleaded, visibly emotional.

The controversy stems from Awusi’s response to Apostle Nyamekye’s criticism of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, and its environmental impact. Awusi had cautioned the church leader against making politically sensitive comments, prompting Debrah’s intervention to ease tensions between the government and the influential religious body.

Apostle Nyamekye has since accepted Debrah’s apology, choosing to focus on reconciliation and forgiveness. “Dr. Mary Awusi has made our church and myself more popular; I forgive her,” he stated, signalling an end to the matter.

The incident highlights the ongoing debate over galamsey and its effects on Ghana’s environment and communities. The government’s efforts to address the issue have been met with criticism from various stakeholders, including religious leaders like Apostle Nyamekye.
