Volta Regional Hospital: A Death Trap in Disguise

The Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe, elevated from a municipal to a regional facility, has been described as a “death trap” by the Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu VII, due to its deplorable state. Speaking during a working visit to the hospital, Togbega Gabusu VII expressed disappointment that the facility’s upgrade has not been matched with corresponding improvements in infrastructure and logistics.
According to #CitiNewsroom, the hospital’s critical departments continue to operate with obsolete equipment, congested wards, and overstretched facilities, putting patients and health workers at risk. The Paramount Chief emphasized that the hospital’s infrastructure remains largely unchanged, raising concerns about its capacity to effectively serve the growing population of the Volta Region.
Togbega Gabusu VII called for urgent government intervention to address the glaring deficiencies, warning that failure to act could further compromise healthcare delivery in the region. “I know the authorities are listening to us and they will act as a matter of urgency to save lives,” he said.
The Administrator of the Volta Regional Hospital, Divine Akie, revealed that the facility currently operates without a dedicated surgical ward and an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a situation he admits is a major setback for a hospital of its status. The absence of a surgical ward means post-operative patients are managed in general wards, increasing congestion and limiting the hospital’s ability to provide specialized care.
The lack of an ICU also means critically ill patients are often referred to facilities outside the region, delaying urgent care and placing additional financial and emotional burden on patients and their families. The Administrator appealed for immediate support to equip the hospital with necessary infrastructure and modern medical equipment.
