GES Closes Recruitment Portal Amidst Frenzy

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has closed its recruitment application portal, overwhelmed by over 40,000 applications for just 7,000 available teaching positions. According to #3NewsGH, the portal was shut down earlier than expected due to the unprecedented response.

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, attributed the limited intake to budgetary constraints, despite the high demand for teaching jobs across the country. “If resources were available, we should be recruiting up to 50,000 teachers across the country, but due to budgetary constraints, we are unable to do that,” he said ¹ ² ³.

Iddrisu assured applicants that the selection process would be fair and merit-based, with priority given to the most qualified candidates. The GES has cautioned the public against fraudsters demanding money for postings, stressing that recruitment is free and based solely on merit.

The overwhelming response reflects the growing competition for teaching jobs in Ghana, with over five applicants vying for each available slot. The GES plans to shortlist, validate documents, and conduct interviews for qualified applicants.

The recruitment drive aims to address teacher shortages, especially in rural areas. Successful applicants are expected to be deployed to fill critical gaps in schools, particularly in underserved districts, ahead of the next academic term.
