Somalia Joins EAC Passport System

 

 

Somalia has officially become the seventh member of the East African Community (EAC) passport system, marking a significant milestone in regional integration. According to EAC officials, the move is expected to ease cross-border movement, boost trade, and strengthen ties among member states.

 

The ceremony, held in Dar es Salaam, was attended by key officials, including representatives from Somalia and other EAC member states. Somalia’s membership is seen as a major step forward in the country’s efforts to integrate with the region.

 

The EAC passport allows citizens of member states to travel freely within the region, promoting people-to-people ties and economic cooperation. The current EAC members whose citizens already use the passport are Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

 

Somalia’s inclusion in the EAC passport system is expected to increase trade and investment opportunities, as well as promote tourism and cultural exchange. The move is also seen as a boost to regional stability and security.

 

The EAC has been working towards deeper integration, with plans to introduce a common currency and a political federation. Somalia’s membership is expected to contribute to these efforts.
