GRIDCo Races to Restore Power After Nationwide Outage
Millions of electricity consumers across Ghana, including residents of the Volta Region, were left in the dark without power.
A major power system disturbance on Ghana’s National Interconnected Transmission System caused widespread electricity outages across several parts of the country, including the Volta Region, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, disrupting power supply to homes, businesses and essential services. According to the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m, resulting in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants on the national electricity network and triggering interruptions in power supply across multiple regions. Residents in the Volta Region, Greater Accra, Eastern, Ashanti and other parts of the country reported being affected by the outage, although GRIDCo has yet to provide a regional breakdown of the extent of the disruption.
In a statement issued on Wednesday July 29, the country’s electricity transmission operator said it had immediately activated its established system restoration procedures. Engineers and system operators are working around the clock in collaboration with key stakeholders in the power sector to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible while ensuring the safety and stability of the national grid. The company assured consumers that restoration efforts remain underway and that power would be restored to all affected customers in phases as the system is stabilised.
GRIDCo also announced the commencement of a comprehensive technical investigation to determine the exact cause of the disturbance. The findings are expected to guide measures aimed at preventing similar incidents and strengthening the resilience of Ghana’s electricity transmission network. While the company did not disclose the number of power plants affected or indicate what triggered the simultaneous tripping of the generating units, the incident underscores the vulnerability of interconnected power systems, where disturbances in one section of the grid can quickly cascade across the national network.
The widespread outage disrupted normal activities in several communities, with residents waking up to homes without electricity and businesses relying on backup power where available. In the Volta Region, several towns experienced the blackout, affecting households and commercial activities before restoration efforts began. GRIDCo however apologised for the inconvenience caused and appreciated the public for its patience and understanding. The company reiterated its commitment to restoring electricity to all affected areas safely and promptly and said additional updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
The latest incident comes as Ghana continues to invest in improving the reliability and resilience of its power infrastructure to meet growing electricity demand while minimizing the risk of widespread system failures. While many Ghanaians eagerly await the power restoration as quickly as possible, the ultimate lies in the effeciency of GRIDCO and the Electricity Company of Ghana to turn on the lights.
