Government Unveils Plans to Upgrade SHSs with $200m World Bank Funding

The Ghanaian government is set to upgrade selected Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country with a $200 million funding from the World Bank. According to the Ghana Education Service, the project aims to improve the quality of education in the country’s secondary schools.

The Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP), which began in 2014, has already made significant strides in enhancing education in Ghana. The project has provided scholarships and bursaries to over 20,000 students, with 60% of the beneficiaries being girls. Additionally, 21 new senior secondary schools have been constructed, and 125 schools have been rehabilitated, increasing the number of available spaces by about 43,000 seats ยน.

The government introduced free Senior High School education in 2017, demonstrating its commitment to improving access to quality education. This initiative has led to increased enrollment rates, with the gross enrollment rate in higher secondary education rising to 45%. The World Bank funding will further support this effort, focusing on improving infrastructure, teacher training, and learning outcomes.

The Ghana Education Service has emphasized that the project will prioritize schools in deprived districts, aiming to bridge the gap in educational opportunities. The funding will also support the development of digital learning resources, including the Ghana Smart Schools Project, which provides students with tablets preloaded with educational content.

The government is working closely with development partners, including the World Bank, to ensure the effective implementation of the project. The initiative is expected to have a significant impact on Ghana’s education sector, enhancing the quality of education and equipping students with the skills needed for the 21st century.
