Pope Leo XIV has released a heartfelt message for the 59th World Day of Peace, observed on January 1, 2026. In his message, the Pope emphasized the importance of peace, urging world leaders and citizens to work towards a more harmonious and peaceful world.

The Pope’s message, titled “Peace be with you,” highlights the need for an “unarmed peace” and encourages Christians to be prophetic witnesses to this novelty. He also stressed the importance of dialogue, mediation, and international law in achieving lasting peace.

Pope Leo XIV expressed concern over the growing trend of increased military spending, which reached $2718 billion in 2024, and the dangers of delegating decisions about life and death to machines. He called for a shift in focus towards disarmament, justice, and human dignity.

The Pope also emphasized the role of religions in promoting peace, urging believers to refute forms of blasphemy that profane the holy name of God. He encouraged prayer, spirituality, and ecumenical and interreligious dialogue as paths to peace.

In his message, Pope Leo XIV cited Saint Augustine, saying “those who truly love peace also love the enemies of peace.” He urged world leaders to prioritize diplomacy and mutual trust over military might.

The Pope’s message concludes with a call to action, encouraging individuals to cultivate peace within themselves and radiate it around them, making the world a more peaceful place.
