Government Renames 24-Hour Markets As District Model Markets Project

Details from Joy Online monitored by http://Howedey.com indicate the renaming is part of a broader review after stakeholder concerns at Agbogbloshie. The project, originally branded as the 24-Hour Model Markets Project under the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, will now be rolled out as District Model Markets to reflect local ownership and district-level implementation.
“You will be part of the process, and you will lead the discussions on how the redevelopment should be done and how the allocations should be made,” Ayariga assured traders. He said government’s objective is to build modern markets that improve trading environment while protecting livelihoods, adding “We are not coming to take your businesses away from you.” The initiative aims to address congestion, improve trading conditions and create inclusive economic opportunities, especially for women and small-scale traders.
Government earlier paused the Agbogbloshie 24-Hour Market redevelopment over trader concerns to allow reassessment. The new District Model Markets approach will ensure redevelopment reflects realities of each market and existing commercial activities are not ignored. Source: MyJoyOnline.com
