According to the Minister, the increase forms part of government’s effort to strengthen traditional leadership and improve support for chiefs who work closely with local government authorities. He said government is exploring ways to use local government resources to support traditional councils because many MMDAs rely heavily on paramount chiefs to implement development programmes.

In a major policy shift, Ayariga also announced that President John Dramani Mahama has directed the creation of a dedicated Local Government TV platform. The platform will bring activities of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies closer to citizens and facilitate live broadcast of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings in local languages on FM stations.

“We believe in popular participation. We will work with NCCE, GBC and NCA to pilot live broadcast of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings in selected MMDAs,” Ayariga said. He added that President Mahama’s vision is that every local government authority must be service oriented and solving residents’ problems, while citizens are properly informed and participate in governance of their localities.
