President John Dramani Mahama has called for a fundamental shift in how Africa approaches healthcare, urging the continent to treat health as an investable economic sector rather than a budgetary cost. The President made the call at the Health Plenary of the Alamein Africa Forum in Egypt over the weekend.

Addressing leaders, financiers and health innovators, President Mahama advocated increased investment in local pharmaceutical manufacturing, regional value chains and health innovation to strengthen Africa’s health sovereignty, create high-value jobs and reduce dependence on imported medicines and vaccines. He said the continent with 1.4 billion people cannot continue to rely on external supply chains for essential health products.

He highlighted Ghana’s Reset agenda, including the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme, Free Primary Health Care, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, and efforts to strengthen domestic capacity in the production of health products. According to President Mahama, the Reset agenda seeks to rethink health governance and push for equitable systems where African countries lead their own health priorities and financing.

President Mahama also called on governments, financiers, regulators and industrial leaders to work together to build resilient African health industries and secure the continent’s health and economic future. He described health sovereignty as a priority for 1.4 billion Africans and urged collective action to industrialize health across the continent.

The Alamein Africa Forum brought together African heads of state, policymakers and industrial leaders in El Alamein, Egypt, to discuss integration, health and economic transformation. Ghana’s delegation highlighted the National Health Insurance expansion and Ghana Medical Trust Fund as pillars of the Reset agenda.

The President’s advocacy aligns with his earlier Accra Reset launch titled A Sovereign Future for Health, where he criticized traditional global aid control. The call for local manufacturing is expected to boost investor interest in Ghana’s pharmaceutical sector and regional value chains, as captured under #MahamaThePresident.
