Mahama At UNGA81 Demands Equitable Global Order
President John Dramani Mahama took his turn at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, calling for a more equitable global order, greater African representation on the UN Security Council and a renewed commitment to dialogue, peace and shared prosperity.
Addressing world leaders at UNGA81, President Mahama said the current international architecture no longer reflects present realities. He argued that Africa with 1.4 billion people cannot remain without a permanent seat on the Security Council while global decisions on peace and security are taken.
The President stressed that peace remains fragile without fairness. He called for dialogue over confrontation and for stronger multilateralism to tackle climate change, inequality and conflicts affecting Africa and the Global South.
According to President Mahama, shared prosperity will only be possible when global financial systems are reformed to give developing countries fair access to capital, debt relief and climate financing. He urged the UN to lead reforms that restore trust in international institutions.
He also highlighted Ghana’s commitment to peacekeeping, democratic governance and regional stability under ECOWAS and the African Union. Mahama said Ghana will continue to champion dialogue in resolving conflicts in the Sahel and across Africa.
The UN General Assembly debate on reform of the Security Council has gained momentum, with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus demanding at least 2 permanent seats with veto power for Africa. Mahama’s call adds Ghana’s voice to the push for a more balanced global order.
President Mahama concluded that the world must choose cooperation over division to secure peace and prosperity for future generations.
