The Bank of Ghana is set to upgrade the country’s banknotes under the new Ghana Cedi Heritage Series scheduled for launch on November 3, 2026. The upgrade was announced by BoG Governor Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama in Accra.
Governor Asiama said the upgraded notes will feature enhanced security, improved durability and modern designs reflecting Ghana’s rich heritage. He explained that the new series is part of BoG’s currency management reforms to stay ahead of counterfeiters and improve handling.
According to Dr Asiama, the Heritage Series will incorporate cutting-edge anti-counterfeit features and longer-lasting materials to reduce replacement costs. The designs will celebrate Ghana’s culture, independence heroes, natural resources and national symbols.
The central bank says existing banknotes will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the new notes until a gradual phase out. BoG will embark on a nationwide education campaign to help the public, traders and banks identify the new security features.
Under the Bank of Ghana Act, BoG has sole authority to issue and manage currency in Ghana. The Heritage Series upgrade aligns with global central banking practice where notes are refreshed every 6 to 10 years to beat counterfeiting technology.
The launch on November 3, 2026 is expected to draw industry players, banks and fintechs as BoG positions the cedi for stronger confidence at a time when digital payments and cash handling coexist in Ghana’s economy.
