The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it does not condone the alleged sexual abuse at Obuasi Senior High Technical School and expects law enforcement agencies to investigate the matter independently, without interference from the party.

General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey made the position known at a press conference at the party headquarters on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as public pressure mounts over the case involving the interdicted headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.

“We do not endorse any such conduct, and we want the law enforcement to do an independent job. We are sure they will, and this party would not in any way interfere,” Mr Kwetey said.

He said the party would accept the outcome of the investigation. “If he’s found guilty, he will pay the right price. If he’s not guilty, we’ll be happy for him. So we want the law enforcement to do its own job.”

The allegations were detailed in an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow,” which uncovered alleged sexual abuse involving 19 female students. The Ghana Education Service has since interdicted Mr Abdulai, while the police have forwarded the case docket to the Attorney-General for study and advice.

Mr Kwetey explained that the NDC’s initial position was taken before the party had access to the full documentary. “The party unfortunately did not have access to Manasseh’s comprehensive disclosure as at Monday,” he said. “Soon after watching those Manasseh tapes comprehensively, it was clear that our earlier position needed to be changed.”

Following the review, Mr Abdulai resigned as Juaben NDC Constituency Secretary and withdrew from the constituency chairmanship contest. The GES has also directed the Ashanti Regional Director and the Obuasi Municipal Director of Education to step aside to ensure the investigation proceeds without interference.

The NDC General Secretary reiterated that the party would not shield anyone because of political connections, saying the country deserves clear assurance that as a party and as government, it does not cover anybody.
