The headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, says he is awaiting a court date over rape allegations against him, insisting that he has his own account of the events and has presented it to the committee investigating the matter.

Mr Abdulai, who is currently interdicted by the Ghana Education Service, said he is cooperating with the processes underway and believes the committee will consider his side of the story. He maintained that the allegations levelled against him do not reflect what happened, and that he has fully responded to the queries put before him.

The allegations are the subject of an investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, titled _Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow_, which detailed alleged sexual abuse involving 19 female students at the school.

Following the documentary, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu directed the GES on October 13 to suspend Mr Abdulai pending investigations. The GES subsequently interdicted him on October 14, stating the decision was to allow for an independent and transparent investigation without interference, with the Ashanti Regional Director of Education taking over administrative oversight.

The police have also been involved, with the Criminal Investigation Department requested to conduct an inquiry. Reports indicate the police have forwarded a case docket to the Office of the Attorney-General for study and advice, while the allegations have not been established in court.

The case has drawn national attention, with the Minority Women’s Caucus calling for an independent investigation and for the welfare and safety of the students to be prioritised, while also stressing that Mr Abdulai is entitled to a fair investigation and the presumption of innocence.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak has clarified that an earlier incident involving the headmaster, which led to students assaulting him, concerned allegations of a fetus burial on the school premises and should not be conflated with the separate sexual abuse allegations revealed in the documentary.
