Mahama Lands In Kwaso To Launch Accra-Kumasi Expressway

President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Kwaso near Ejisu aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Airbus H175 to preside over the official handover of the 175.6 kilometre Right-of-Way cleared by the Ghana Armed Forces Engineers to the Government of Ghana for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project.

The high-level reception at Kwaso underscored the strategic significance of the milestone, with Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza, Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson and Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene on hand to welcome the President. The cleared corridor now allows full mobilisation for the 198.7 kilometre expressway, a dual carriageway designed to decongest Ghana’s busiest transit spine.

Addressing officers and officials at the ceremony, President Mahama commended the Armed Forces Engineers for precision execution under demanding terrain, describing the handover as the definitive trigger for construction. He emphasised that the expressway will compress travel time, reduce head-on collisions and unlock agribusiness and industrial value along the central corridor. Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei said the military engineering feat demonstrates capacity for civil-military synergy in national development.

The Accra-Kumasi highway remains the principal conduit for freight, passenger movement and agricultural haulage, yet its deterioration has inflated logistics costs and road fatalities. Construction of a modern expressway is therefore viewed as a transformative intervention that will enhance connectivity, improve safety metrics and stimulate economic growth along one of Ghana’s most critical transport corridors.

With the Right-of-Way formally transferred, contractors are expected to commence earthworks and pavement construction in phases, with government indicating that community engagement and local content will remain integral to implementation. The project is anticipated to redefine mobility between the two largest economic hubs and reinforce Ghana’s ambition for a resilient trunk road network.
