Teacher Unions Blast Muntaka Over Offensive WASSCE Certificate Slur

Teacher Unions across Ghana have condemned remarks by Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak on alleged forged West African Senior School Certificate Examination credentials, describing his commentary as unfortunate, offensive, misguided, vicious, derogatory and irresponsible during a heated response in Accra.

The unions, comprising major pre tertiary educator associations, issued a joint rejoinder denouncing the Minister’s sweeping characterisation of teachers as complicit in certificate forgery within the security recruitment pipeline. They argued that such pronouncements denigrate the teaching profession and erode public trust without evidentiary substantiation.

According to #GHOneNews, the unions stated that labelling teachers with such pejorative epithets constitutes an affront to professional dignity and pedagogical sacrifice. One union leader stated, quote, To impugn an entire profession without due diligence is both reckless and injurious to morale, end quote, demanding an unqualified retraction and an apology from the Interior Ministry.

The controversy emanates from recent discourse on fraudulent certificates allegedly presented during security service enlistment, which prompted ministerial commentary implicating educational actors. Teacher Unions contend that authentication of WASSCE credentials remains the statutory mandate of the West African Examinations Council and security vetting agencies, not classroom practitioners, and that wholesale indictment constitutes scapegoating.

The standoff places government teacher relations under renewed strain, with unions warning that failure to withdraw the remarks could trigger industrial disquiet and formal petitions to oversight bodies. Analysts observe that balancing integrity in recruitment with respect for professional institutions remains critical to preserving institutional cohesion and safeguarding the credibility of Ghana’s examination architecture.
