Obaapa Christy Unfazed by Unauthorized Use of Her Songs
Gospel icon says young musicians are free to grow through her music, describing it as a blessing rather than a battle.
Ghanaian gospel musician Obaapa Christy has revealed that many emerging gospel artistes perform her songs at gospel events and on digital platforms without first seeking her permission, but says she has no intention of confronting them over the practice. Speaking during an interview on Hitz Praise Zone with host Nii Noi, the award-winning singer explained that she understands why many young musicians rely on her songs, recalling that musicians of her generation also depended on songs by senior gospel ministers as they built their ministries.
According to her, the major difference between then and now is the availability of platforms for promoting music. “Back then, we only had radio and television, and even those platforms were very limited. Today, social media has opened countless opportunities for young musicians to reach the world with the talent God has given them,” she said. Obaapa Christy noted that the rise of digital platforms has transformed the music industry, making it easier for upcoming artistes to reach wider audiences than was possible in earlier years.
She said the changing landscape has influenced her outlook on the issue, insisting she does not believe in pursuing or reprimanding young musicians who perform her songs without prior approval. “If social media had existed during our time, I’m sure many musicians from our generation would also have used other people’s songs to grow their platforms,” she stated.
The celebrated gospel musician further disclosed that several artistes have used her songs to build their presence on YouTube and other social media platforms, attracting followers and growing their audiences in the process. “Some of them are even earning a living from the numbers they’ve built using my songs, and I don’t see that as a bad thing. God has a way of blessing all of us,” she added.
Widely regarded as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel artistes, Obaapa Christy has spent more than two decades shaping the country’s gospel music scene with a catalogue of popular songs and award-winning albums. Meanwhile, she is preparing to host the 2026 edition of Royal Praise, an afternoon of worship and gospel music scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026, at UPSA in Accra.
The event is expected to feature performances from Empress Gifty, Joyce Blessing, Celestine Donkor, Akesse Brempong, Uncle Ato and Kwaku Gyasi.
