Two Feared Dead In a Devastating Crush
A suspected tyre burst claimed two lives leaving two others with sustained injuries following a tragic road crash involving two cargo trucks on the Accra-Kumasi Highway at Asuboi in the Eastern Region.
According a report by the PR unit of the Suhum Municipal Fire Station, the fatal accident occurred on Saturday, July 18, 2026, prompting an emergency response from the Suhum Municipal Fire Station after a distress call was received at about 9:01 a.m. A six-member rescue team was then deployed, led by Station Officer I Antwi Forson. The team arrived at the scene within minutes and found occupants trapped in the mangled wreckage of a Hyundai truck with registration number GX 7359-14 and a KIA Rhino truck bearing registration number GX 857-16.
The Firefighters immediately deployed specialized extrication equipment to free the trapped victims before handing them over to personnel of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Ambulance Service for transportation to the Suhum Government Hospital.
Despite the rescue efforts, two of the four victims involved in the crash were pronounced dead, while the remaining two sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to the Suhum Municipal Hospital for treatment.
The Preliminary investigations by the Fire Officers at the scene indicate that the KIA Rhino truck, which was travelling from the Upper West Region towards Accra, suffered a front tyre burst. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the rear of the Hyundai truck ahead.
The impact of the collision left both vehicles extensively damaged. The Hyundai truck sustained severe damage to its front section, while the KIA Rhino’s front portion and one of its tyres were completely destroyed.
The report also outlined that Personnel from the Suhum Motor Traffic and Transport Department MTTD, of the Ghana Police Service and the Ayensuano District Ambulance Service also assisted in managing the emergency and conveying the casualties to the hospital.
Investigations are expected to commence into the incident as they continue efforts to improve safety on one of the country’s busiest highways.
The latest crash adds to the growing number of fatal road accidents recorded on the Accra-Kumasi Highway, renewing concerns over road safety and the need for strict vehicle maintenance, particularly for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
