Salaga Midwives Arrested Over Missing Infant

Consternation deepened in Salaga after police detained two midwives as prime suspects in the disappearance of a neonate from Salaga Government Hospital, intensifying investigations into alleged internal complicity at the health facility.

According to the Ghana Police Service, the arrests followed rigorous interrogation of personnel on duty during the infant’s unexplained vanishing from the maternity ward. Investigators are probing whether breaches in custodial protocol or collusion facilitated the removal of the child who had been under observation for respiratory complications.

According to the East Gonja Municipal Health Directorate, the detained practitioners have been relieved of clinical duties pending the outcome of the criminal inquiry and an independent administrative audit. The directorate expressed dismay at the development, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on professional misconduct that jeopardises patient safety.

Salaga Government Hospital functions as a pivotal referral hub for maternal and neonatal care in the Savannah corridor, frequently grappling with logistical constraints that test institutional safeguards. According to child protection advocate Dr. Evelyn Amoako, the involvement of caregivers in such incidents erodes public trust and mandates urgent reforms, including biometric access systems and continuous surveillance in delivery units.

According to the Ghana Police Service, efforts to locate the missing neonate have been escalated, with community intelligence units and social welfare officers collaborating to ensure the child’s safe recovery. Authorities vowed to pursue prosecution to the fullest extent should culpability be established, while urging calm and vigilance among residents.
