Turner, known for his bold and outspoken personality, was a trailblazer in the media industry. He built a vast empire that included CNN, TBS, and TNT, among other networks, and was a pioneer in satellite broadcasting. His innovative approach to news broadcasting earned him the nickname “Captain Outrageous”.
“Ted was an intensely involved and committed leader, intrepid, fearless and always willing to back a hunch and trust his own judgement,” said Mark Thompson, Chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide. “He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN”.
Turner’s journey in media began with his father’s billboard company, which he took over at the age of 24. He later ventured into television, acquiring a struggling Atlanta station and turning it into a successful superstation. His brainchild, CNN, became a global phenomenon, providing 24-hour news coverage and setting a new standard for broadcast journalism.
