Akosombo Fault Triggers 4-Hour Blackout in Volta, Oti Regions; ECG Awaited GRIDCo Fix

A technical challenge at the Akosombo Generating Station plunged parts of the Volta and Oti Regions into darkness for over four hours on Tuesday morning, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has confirmed. Power went off at 5:00 a.m. and was not fully restored until 9:30 a.m., affecting households, businesses, and essential services across major towns including Ho, Kpando, Hohoe, Dambai, and Jasikan.

What Happened
According to a statement from ECG Volta, the outage was triggered by “a technical challenge from the Akosombo power station” which disrupted supply on the transmission network managed by the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).“ECG awaits GRIDCo to rectify the issue,” the statement said, noting that ECG’s distribution lines were intact but could not receive power until transmission was restored. By 9:15 a.m., the fault had been isolated and power was gradually wheeled back to bulk supply points. Full restoration across affected districts was completed by 9:30 a.m.

Impact
The early morning outage disrupted water supply in Ho, halted operations at cold stores and health facilities running on the national grid and forced some BECE candidates to prepare for exams in darkness. “We had to use torchlights to iron uniforms. It was stressful for the children,” said Esi Anku, a parent at Bankoe.Hospital administrators said standby generators were activated for critical units, but outpatient services were delayed.

Official Response
GRIDCo has not yet disclosed the exact nature of the technical fault at Akosombo but assured the public of a detailed report. “Our engineers are conducting post-fault analysis to prevent recurrence,” a GRIDCo source told Citi News. ECG apologized to customers in the Volta and Oti Regions for the inconvenience and thanked them for their patience. “We regret the disruption. Once GRIDCo resolved the transmission challenge, our teams worked to restore all feeders immediately,” said ECG Volta PRO, Benjamin Obeng Antwi.

Background
Akosombo Dam, with 1,020 MW installed capacity, remains Ghana’s largest generation source. Tuesday’s incident highlights lingering vulnerabilities when single generation or transmission faults cascade to regional blackouts’ and GRIDCo is expected to brief the Energy Ministry later today.
