CID Detains NPP’s Abronye DC Over Judicial Threats

The Criminal Investigations Department has taken New Patriotic Party Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, widely known as Abronye DC, into custody following allegations that he issued menacing remarks against a jurist of the Adenta High Court and instigated widespread public disquiet. The development marks a significant escalation in law enforcement’s response to perceived infractions against the judiciary.
According to a Ghana Police Service operational brief, investigators moved swiftly after digital and broadcast utterances attributed to the outspoken party executive were flagged for contravening provisions safeguarding judicial officers from intimidation. The apprehension occurred at a location in Accra after preliminary inquiries established prima facie grounds for interrogation. Police maintain that the action is procedural and aimed at preserving the sanctity of the bench.
During preliminary caution statements, Abronye DC reportedly denied criminal intent, asserting that his commentary fell within the ambit of political expression. According to the Ghana Bar Association advisory released yesterday, any attempt to exert undue influence on adjudicators corrodes constitutional safeguards and invites severe legal consequences. Legal analysts interviewed on the matter stressed that the independence of the judiciary remains a non-negotiable pillar of democratic governance.
The Bono Regional Chairman has cultivated a reputation for combative political rhetoric and has previously faced litigation over defamatory claims against public officials. The Adenta High Court has in recent months adjudicated several high-profile political matters, elevating its visibility in national discourse. According to the Judicial Service press office, security protocols for judges have been reviewed in light of emerging threats to judicial personnel.
The arrest reignites debate on the equilibrium between free speech and contemptuous conduct, with civil society actors urging circumspection in public commentary on live cases. Prosecutors are expected to prefer formal charges after docket compilation, while defense counsel has signaled intentions to seek bail at the earliest opportunity. The unfolding case will test the robustness of institutional mechanisms designed to shield the judiciary from external pressure.
