Allies Balk at Trump’s Call for Hormuz Strait Aid

US President Donald Trump has warned that NATO faces a “very bad future” if allies fail to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil shipments, amidst escalating tensions with Iran. According to #FinancialTimes, Trump expressed frustration with allies, saying some countries have been helped by the US for years but are not enthusiastic about assisting.

Germany, Spain, and Italy have rejected Trump’s request for military support, citing lack of consultation before the US-Israeli war on Iran. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the conflict has nothing to do with NATO, while German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius questioned what European frigates could do that the US Navy cannot.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK is working with allies on a viable plan to reopen the strait but won’t participate in a NATO mission. According to #Reuters, Starmer’s government is considering non-combat support roles, such as deploying mine-clearing drones.

Trump has pressed China to help secure the strait, saying Beijing gets 90% of its oil from the waterway. He indicated a possible delay in his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping pending China’s position. The US has moved naval assets to the region, and Iran has retaliated with drone attacks and naval mines.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route, with about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas passing through. The conflict has sent oil prices soaring, and allies are wary of escalating military involvement.
