27 Women Remanded for Alleged Prostitution in Accra

Twenty-seven women were remanded into police custody for two weeks by the La District Court for allegedly engaging in prostitution. According to #GhanaNews, the women were arrested during a police operation aimed at clamping down on prostitution and related activities in parts of Accra.
The prosecution told the court that the women were picked up at various locations during a targeted exercise by the Ghana Police Service. The court granted the prosecution’s request to remand the accused persons, citing the need for sufficient time to complete investigations into the case.
Prostitution remains an offence under Ghanaian law, and individuals found guilty of engaging in such activities can face legal consequences under the country’s criminal statutes, specifically the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The remanded women are expected to reappear before the court on April 2, 2026, when the case will continue and further directions may be given. Authorities say operations to curb prostitution and other social vices will continue as part of broader efforts to maintain public order and enforce the laws of the country.
The issue of prostitution in Ghana is complex, reflecting broader socio-economic and cultural realities. Despite its illegal status, prostitution persists, driven by factors such as poverty, unemployment, and rural-urban migration ยน.
