Deputy Minister Inspects Non-Functional Fishing Harbour

The Deputy Minister for Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has paid a working visit to the Jamestown Fishing Harbour in Accra, which has remained non-functional since its commissioning in September 2024. The purpose of the visit was to assess the harbour’s activities and identify ways to improve its operations.
According to #3NewsGH, the harbour, constructed under a US$50 million Chinese Government Grant, is equipped with modern facilities, including an ice-making plant, a cold store, and a fish market. The facility was expected to create employment opportunities for over 4,000 people and boost domestic fish production.
The Jamestown Fishing Harbour is part of the government’s initiative to construct and rehabilitate fishing harbours and landing sites in 12 coastal towns in Ghana. The project aims to improve the livelihoods of local fisherfolk and reduce post-harvest losses.
The harbour’s commissioning was hailed as a significant milestone in Ghana’s fishing industry, with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo describing it as a “symbol of hope” and a “vital lifeline for socio-economic empowerment, job creation, and improved livelihoods”.
The Deputy Minister’s visit is expected to expedite the harbour’s operationalization and address the challenges hindering its functionality.
