Afenyo-Markin Slams Jantuah Over Petition Snub
The “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration turned tense at the seat of government on Thursday, 6th August, 2026, after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin rejected the official nominated to receive the NPP’s petition to the President.
Thousands of New Patriotic Party supporters marched through Accra to Jubilee House to present a memorandum citing concerns over democratic governance. At the gates, Nana Yaa Jantuah stepped forward to receive the document on behalf of the Presidency. The move drew an immediate rebuke from the Minority Leader.
“To nominate you alone to come amounts to disrespecting us as a political party,” Afenyo-Markin told Jantuah in a charged exchange witnessed by party faithful and security personnel. He argued that a matter of such national import warranted representation at a higher level of executive authority, not a solitary appointee.
According to MetroNews, the petition contained allegations of constitutional breaches and calls for urgent redress. NPP officials maintained that the manner of receipt risked trivializing legitimate political dissent and set a poor precedent for engagement between government and opposition.
The demonstration proceeded peacefully, with demonstrators chanting and brandishing placards while security kept order. Political observers note that protocol around receiving party petitions has become a flashpoint, often interpreted as a signal of how much weight the executive accords opposition grievances.
With the memorandum now submitted, the onus shifts to the Presidency to respond substantively. For the NPP, Wednesday’s confrontation has reinforced its narrative that democratic institutions are under strain and require vigilant public scrutiny.
