Ghana Honors Heroes of 1948 Crossroads Shooting

 

 

Ghana’s Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon Ernest Brogya Genfi, joined Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and other dignitaries to commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the 28th February Crossroads Shooting incident in Accra. The 1948 incident was a pivotal moment in Ghana’s struggle for independence, marking a turning point in the country’s fight against colonial rule.

 

The ceremony featured a solemn wreath-laying, Sounding of last post, a minute silence, and Reveille, paying tribute to Sergeant Cornelius Francis Adjetey, Corporal Patrick Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey, who lost their lives in the clash with British colonial authorities.

 

The incident at the Crossroads, now known as the Obelisk, was a catalyst for Ghana’s independence movement, sparking widespread protests and calls for self-governance. The commemoration brought together government officials and stakeholders to reflect on the past and honor the memories of the victims.

 

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the significance of the event, highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen heroes. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of Ghana’s history and the ongoing struggle for independence and self-determination.
