Ghanaian Minister Meets Ukraine’s Zelenskyy Amid Crisis

 

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has embarked on an official visit to Ukraine, meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss the protection of Ghanaian citizens and bilateral cooperation. The minister’s visit comes amid concerns over the safety of two Ghanaian nationals being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine.

 

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussions between President Zelenskyy and Minister Ablakwa focused on Ghana’s humanitarian appeal for the release of the Ghanaian nationals. The minister conveyed the Ghanaian government’s concern for their welfare and safety, emphasizing the need for their rights to be protected under international law and humanitarian conventions.

 

President Zelenskyy assured Minister Ablakwa that everything possible would be done to protect the Ghanaian nationals, with the minister expressing gratitude for the assurances. The two leaders also explored ways to combat transnational trafficking networks exploiting vulnerable African youth, luring them into conflict situations.

 

The meeting also touched on deepening cooperation in agriculture, defense, education, and trade, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to expanding diplomatic engagement. President Zelenskyy extended an invitation to President John Dramani Mahama to visit Ukraine, seeking to elevate diplomatic ties between the two countries.

 

Minister Ablakwa emphasized the Ghanaian government’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens’ interests and dignity, stating that every Ghanaian life matters. The visit reflects Ghana’s prioritization of citizen protection abroad as a key foreign policy objective.

 

The minister’s visit is expected to yield positive outcomes, strengthening Ghana-Ukraine relations and promoting cooperation in various fields.
