GES Staff Arrears: Where’s the GHS1.1bn?

Newly posted Ghana Education Service staff are anxiously waiting for their salary arrears, after Cabinet approved GHS1.1 billion for payment in October 2025. The funds were meant to clear 10 months of unpaid salaries, but the money hasn’t reflected on staff payment vouchers, sparking concerns among the affected workers.

The Coalition of Unpaid Newly Posted GES Staff has expressed frustration over the delay, stating that some teachers have worked for over a year without full remuneration. The coalition had given government and education authorities an ultimatum to resolve the issue by January 2026.

The Ghana Education Service had announced that salaries owed to 6,249 teaching and non-teaching staff would be paid by the end of November 2025, following Cabinet approval for payment of outstanding arrears. However, the recent development has left many wondering when they’ll receive their dues.

The Education Minister had confirmed that Cabinet approved the absorption and back pay of 6,200 teachers who worked over eight months without salary. The Finance Minister was authorized to reallocate GHS1.1 billion to facilitate the payment.

The delay has caused severe financial hardship for the affected staff, impacting their ability to pay rent, settle debts, access healthcare, and meet basic living expenses. The coalition is calling for urgent government intervention to address the issue.

The Ghana Education Service has assured affected teachers that efforts are being made to rectify the situation, but the wait continues.
