Ghana Gets Boost for Big Push Programme

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has signed a US$12.83 million grant agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the government’s Big Push Programme. The grant will fund feasibility studies for key infrastructure and agro-industrial projects, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
According to the finance minister, the grant will cover detailed feasibility studies, full project designs, cost estimates, and environmental and social impact assessments. The projects to benefit from the funding include a proposed interchange at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra and the redevelopment of major markets across the country, such as Agbogbloshie in Accra and Techiman in the Bono East Region.
The Big Push Programme aims to accelerate infrastructure delivery, improve market infrastructure, ease traffic congestion in key urban centers, and promote agro-industrial development to support jobs and economic growth. The programme is expected to play a key role in Ghana’s development agenda, with the AfDB pledging its support for the initiative.
Dr. Forson expressed gratitude to the AfDB and its Country Manager, Ms. Eyerusalem Fasika, for their strong partnership and continued support for Ghana’s development agenda. The finance minister emphasized that the objective of the grant is to ensure that the projects are technically sound, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable.
The AfDB has identified five key areas for transformational partnership with Ghana, including advancing transport infrastructure development and strengthening digital transformation. The bank will work with partners to establish a credit enhancement and de-risking facility to unlock part of Ghana’s USD 5.2 billion cedis equivalent in pension assets for infrastructure investment.
The Big Push Programme is a comprehensive infrastructure development program aimed at addressing Ghana’s longstanding infrastructure deficit and stimulating economic growth. With the AfDB’s support, Ghana is poised to make significant strides in its development agenda.
