NaCCA Recalls SHS Physical Education Manual Over Controversial Content

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has directed all teachers in possession of hard copies of the SHS Physical Education & Health teachers’ manual to return them immediately. This move follows concerns raised about certain definitions in the manual that were not adequately flagged during the review process.
According to Prof. Vincent Assanful, Chairman of the NaCCA Board, the affected sections, particularly the definition of terms, will be thoroughly reviewed and corrected as part of ongoing curriculum revisions. He assured teachers, parents, and the public that the council is committed to ensuring that teaching materials reflect Ghanaian values while maintaining academic credibility.
The controversy surrounds a section defining gender identity, which has sparked debate over its consistency with Ghana’s laws and cultural values. NaCCA has acknowledged that the manual had passed through expert review but apologized for the oversight, stating that the definition should have been flagged during the review process.
The recall affects the Year 2 Physical Education and Health teachers’ manual, and teachers have been instructed to return their copies to facilitate the review process. According to MyJoyOnline, the move has been welcomed by some education stakeholders, who are calling for stronger oversight in the development of curricula and related teaching materials.
NaCCA’s decision underscores its commitment to quality assurance and ensuring that educational materials align with Ghana’s cultural values and laws. The council has assured stakeholders that the review process will be thorough and transparent.
