US Military Option on the Table as Europe Rejects Greenland Threats

The United States has sparked controversy by suggesting the use of military force to acquire Greenland, a self-governing part of Denmark, citing national security concerns. According to the White House, President Donald Trump views Greenland as a strategic priority to deter adversaries in the Arctic region.
The proposal has been met with widespread rejection from European leaders, who emphasize Greenland’s right to self-determination. Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK have issued a joint statement affirming that Greenland “belongs to its people”. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also warned that a US takeover would undermine NATO’s credibility.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen is calling for a respectful dialogue with the US, while reiterating the island’s desire for autonomy. The US has a military presence in Greenland, operating the Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile defense and space surveillance operations.
The US interest in Greenland is driven by its strategic location and mineral wealth, including rare earth minerals crucial for renewable energy technologies. However, Denmark and Greenland have rejected US claims that they cannot protect the island, with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen dismissing Trump’s assertions as inaccurate.
European leaders are urging calm, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warning that threats against NATO members undermine the alliance’s credibility. The situation remains tense, with the US and Denmark yet to resolve their differences.
