US Man Jailed For Hiding Mother In Freezer
A 60-year-old man has been jailed after keeping his 89-year-old mother’s body in a freezer for nearly three years while continuing to collect her pension benefits. The disturbing case unfolded at a home on Poplar Crescent in Bridget County and has raised questions about elder welfare and financial exploitation.
Christopher Philis was arrested in February 2026 following a welfare check that led authorities to the remains of his mother, Sylvia Philis. Investigators determined she had died in March 2023. Prosecutors told the court that Philis concealed the death and allegedly diverted pension payments issued in her name during the period of concealment.
According to court records, officials became suspicious after relatives reported they had not seen Sylvia Philis for an extended time. Law enforcement officers who entered the residence discovered the body stored in a freezer, prompting charges of abuse of a corpse and fraud.
The prosecution argued that the concealment obstructed death certification, funeral arrangements, and proper estate administration. They further contended that the continued collection of benefits represented a deliberate attempt to financially exploit the deceased. The defense offered no evidence of foul play in the death itself.
