Atiwa East MCE Fined GH¢12,000 for Contempt in Galamsey Case
Ernest Ntim, the Municipal Chief Executive of Atiwa East, has been fined GH¢12,000 by the Koforidua High Court 2 for contempt of court related to illegal mining activities. The court initially sentenced him to 8 days in jail, but later commuted the sentence to a fine.
Ntim was found guilty of destroying farmlands, polluting the Koben River, and contaminating a key water source serving several communities. He allegedly continued galamsey activities despite a pending injunction application before the court, causing extensive environmental damage and threatening local livelihoods.
Ntim claims the court’s ruling stemmed from a long-standing land dispute, not illegal mining. He insists he never visited the disputed site and was acting as a concerned community member, defending residents against perceived injustices.
