UN Human Rights Office Condemns US Intervention in Venezuela as Violation of International Law

The United Nations human rights office has strongly condemned the US military intervention in Venezuela, stating that it violates international law and the UN Charter. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the action undermines global security and risks worsening human rights in the country.
The US operation, which ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, has been deemed unacceptable by the UN human rights office. Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the High Commissioner, emphasized that using human rights arguments to justify military intervention is unacceptable and damages the architecture of international security.
According to the UN human rights office, the military intervention makes every country less safe and sends a signal that powerful nations can do as they please. The office stresses that the future of Venezuela must be determined by its people alone, with full respect for their human rights and sovereignty.
The humanitarian situation in Venezuela is already dire, with almost eight million people, or one in four Venezuelans, needing assistance. The UN aid coordination office notes that 900,000 have very high multisectoral needs, including food, nutrition, education, and health services.
The UN human rights office has called on the US and Venezuelan authorities, as well as the international community, to ensure full respect for international law, including human rights. The office emphasizes that accountability for human rights violations cannot be achieved through unilateral military intervention.
The international community must come together to insist that the US intervention is a violation of international law, says the UN human rights office.
