Supreme Court Slashes Trump’s Sweeping Global Tariffs

The US Supreme Court has dealt a significant blow to President Donald Trump’s economic agenda, ruling that his sweeping global tariffs are unconstitutional. The 6-3 decision strikes down tariffs imposed on countries worldwide, citing the president’s overreach of authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
According to The Indian Express, Trump had invoked IEEPA to impose tariffs on nearly every US trading partner, arguing it was necessary to address a national emergency related to trade deficits. However, the court found that the Constitution grants Congress, not the president, the power to impose taxes and tariffs.
“The Framers did not vest any part of the taxing power in the Executive Branch,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision. The ruling is a major setback for Trump’s economic policy, which has been characterized by aggressive trade measures and tariffs.
The tariffs, imposed in April 2025, were expected to generate trillions of dollars in revenue but have also sparked trade wars and economic uncertainty. The US Treasury Department had collected over $175 billion in tariffs as of December, but this amount may now be subject to refunds.
Trump had argued that the tariffs were vital for US economic security, but the court disagreed. The decision does not affect sector-specific duties imposed on steel, aluminum, and other goods.
The ruling is likely to have significant implications for global trade and the US economy. The Trump administration is exploring alternative measures to retain tariffs, including invoking national security provisions.
