Ghana Leaps to 39th in Global Press Freedom Rankings

Ghana has made a significant stride in press freedom, climbing 13 spots to rank 39th out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF). This marks the country’s highest ranking in five years, with improvements across all five indicators, including political context, legal framework, economic context, sociocultural factors, and safety.

The RSF report attributes Ghana’s progress to a more enabling environment for journalism, with stronger safeguards for press operations and fewer restrictions. Ghana’s overall score improved to 72.2, up from 67.13 in 2025, reflecting gains in multiple areas, including legal protections, political environment, and economic conditions for the media.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye, Minister in charge of Government Communications, hailed the ranking as a testament to the government’s efforts to guarantee media rights. “It reflects the sort of work that we continue to put in and the efforts that we make to guarantee the rights of the Ghanaian media to practice freely,” he said.

Despite the progress, concerns persist about journalist safety and broader global declines in press freedom. The Ghana Journalists Association notes that Ghana’s improvement is encouraging, but emphasizes the need for continued efforts to protect media freedom and reduce hostility towards journalists.

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index highlights a worrying global trend, with over half of countries classified as having “difficult” or “very serious” conditions for journalists. The report urges governments to do more to protect press freedom and ensure accountability for attacks on journalists.
