Denmark to Summon US Ambassador

Denmark to Summon US Ambassador Over Greenland Envoy Appointment.
Denmark is taking a strong stance against the US after President Donald Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen expressed his deep anger, stating that the appointment and accompanying statements are “totally unacceptable” and undermine Denmark’s sovereignty.
The move has sparked concerns about US interference in Greenland’s affairs, with Rasmussen emphasizing that Denmark will not accept any attempts to undermine its sovereignty. Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has its own government but is still subject to Danish rule.
Landry’s appointment has been met with criticism, particularly after he tweeted that he’d serve in the role “to make Greenland a part of the US”. This statement has further strained relations between the US and Denmark, with the EU expressing support for Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has reiterated that the island is not for sale and will decide its future itself. The vast majority of Greenland’s 57,000 people want independence from Denmark but don’t wish to become part of the US.
The situation highlights the strategic importance of Greenland, rich in natural resources and located between North America and Europe. Trump’s administration has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, citing national security concerns.
