Fatal Peki-Tsame Crash Claims 15 Lives

Regional Minister Deeply Worried

A devastating head-on collision between a passenger bus and a container truck near Peki Senior High School has left multiple fatalities and a trail of grief across the Volta Region. The pre-dawn accident has reignited urgent discourse on road safety along Ghana’s precarious highways.

According to details from the scene, the bus travelling from Battor to Kabiti collided violently with a truck en route from Nkwanta to Accra. Emergency responders extricated numerous survivors from the wreckage, including two infants who tragically lost their mothers in the carnage. The deceased have been deposited at the Peki Government Hospital mortuary while the injured receive critical care at the same facility, with some slated for transfer to the teaching hospital in Ho.

Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu, visibly distressed, visited survivors and conferred with Medical Superintendent Dr. Daniel Okyere Koranteng to assess the medical response. His subsequent courtesy call on Deiga Kwadzo Dei XII, Paramount Chief of Peki Traditional Area, underscored communal anguish over recurrent fatal accidents on the Peki road. The Chief’s earlier entreaty to the Minister reflects a longstanding plea for infrastructural and enforcement interventions.

The Peki-Tsame stretch has earned notoriety for lethal collisions, often attributed to driver fatigue, speeding, and inadequate road design. For communities such as Korkor and surrounding settlements, the highway functions as both economic artery and site of perennial peril. Each incident erodes public confidence and exacts an incalculable human toll.

Investigations into the immediate cause remain underway, yet the broader imperative is clear: systemic reform encompassing road engineering, traffic regulation, and public education. The Minister’s condolences extend most poignantly to the orphaned infants, symbols of innocence interrupted. Until structural remedies materialize, the road will continue to demand lives it should protect.
