The United States has announced a freeze on immigrant visa issuance to nationals of 75 countries, including Russia, Iran, and Somalia, effective January 21, 2026. The move is aimed at protecting national security and public safety, with the State Department citing concerns over misuse of public benefits by foreign nationals.

 

According to the State Department, the ban is part of a broader effort to reassess immigration processing procedures and prevent individuals who would take welfare and public benefits from entering the country. The restriction applies to various visa categories, including immigrant visas, with limited exceptions for certain individuals, such as those seeking visas for humanitarian reasons or with valid visas issued prior to the ban.

 

The affected countries include Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.

 

The US government has emphasized that the move is necessary to protect American citizens and interests. The ban follows earlier restrictions on H-1B nonimmigrant workers and other visa categories, citing national security concerns ¹ ².

 

The State Department has assured that existing visas will not be revoked, and exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. Applicants from affected countries are advised to consult the US embassy or consulate for guidance on their specific situations.
