BoG Disowns Politics in Twitter Creators’ Meeting, Vows Faster Payment

BoG Disowns Politics in X

The Bank of Ghana has rejected claims that a group of X content creators it hosted last month are politically linked, insisting the engagement was strictly about fixing payment bottlenecks. The clarification follows an April 22, 2026 meeting where creators flagged persistent delays in receiving earnings from X, formerly Twitter. Many said the holdups were choking a vital income stream for Ghana’s digital economy.

“No political affiliation”

In a statement released today, the central bank was unequivocal:
“We state categorically that this group has no political affiliation. They engaged the Bank solely as concerned content creators seeking a practical resolution to a legitimate issue.”The BoG said discussions centered on operational snags between international payment processors, local banks, and X’s payout system that leave creators waiting weeks for funds.

Fixes underway

Acknowledging the frustration, the regulator confirmed it is rolling out measures to “significantly cut down the time it takes for such payments to be processed.” While timelines weren’t disclosed, officials hinted at streamlined forex approvals and direct engagement with X’s payment partners. The meeting underscores how Ghana’s creator economy — from comedy skits to cultural commentary — now factors into financial policy. For many young Ghanaians, monetized posts on X are rent money, not just retweets.

Background

X began sharing ad revenue with verified creators in 2023. But in Ghana, users have reported payout delays of 30-60 days, often due to intermediary bank checks and dollar-cedi conversion hurdles. The BoG’s move to meet creators directly marks a shift from treating digital earnings as fringe to recognizing them as part of formal remittance flows. No political names were attached to the delegation, the Bank stressed.
