Trump Unveils ‘Board of Peace’ Initiative in Davos

US President Donald Trump has launched the ‘Board of Peace’, a new international body aimed at resolving global conflicts, at a ceremony in Davos, Switzerland. The initiative, which has sparked controversy, is seen as an attempt to rival the United Nations.

According to Reuters, Trump stated that the Board of Peace would work “in conjunction” with the UN, but its focus would be on taking action, rather than just talking. The board’s founding members include leaders from 19 countries, including Argentina, Hungary, and Qatar.

The Board of Peace’s charter does not mention Gaza once, despite initially being conceived to oversee the rebuilding of the region. Trump claimed that the board would be “very successful in Gaza” and could expand its scope to address other global crises.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the board’s priority was to ensure the Gaza ceasefire endures, but its possibilities were “endless”. He described the Board of Peace as a “board of action”.

The initiative has faced criticism, with some fearing it would undermine the UN. The UK, France, and other European nations have expressed scepticism, with the UK saying it would not join due to concerns about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s potential involvement.

The Board of Peace will require permanent members to contribute $1 billion, leading to concerns that it could become a “pay to play” version of the UN Security Council.
