Kenneth Ofori-Atta Held at Caroline Detention Centre Amidst ICE Detention

 

Kenneth Ofori-Atta, a Ghanaian national, is currently being held at the Caroline Detention Centre in Virginia, USA, after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over his visa status. The facility, a former jail repurposed into a detention center, can hold up to 336 adult detainees, including men and women.

 

According to reports, the Caroline Detention Centre currently houses 120 persons with criminal records, with Ofori-Atta being one of the detainees. The centre is operated by the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office and primarily houses individuals awaiting trial or sentencing, typically for less than two years.

 

The detention centre has specific visitation hours, with females allowed to receive visitors from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM, while males are allowed visitors from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM for low to medium custody, and 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM for medium to high custody. Attorneys are allowed to visit their clients daily from 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM ¹ ².

 

Detainees at the Caroline Detention Centre are allowed to receive funds through various methods, including online deposits, kiosks at the facility, or by mailing a money order. They can also purchase personal hygiene products, snacks, and other approved items from the commissary.

 

The centre has rules in place to ensure safety and security, including restrictions on personal items and approved vendors for books and magazines. Inmates can receive letters, legal documents, and photographs, but items like greeting cards with glitter or stickers are prohibited.

 

Ofori-Atta’s detention has sparked concern among his family and friends, with many calling for his release. The Ghanaian government has been urged to intervene in the matter and secure his release.
