Arrested for Impersonating NAIMOS Officials

The Ghana Police Service has arrested five individuals for allegedly posing as officials of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and extorting money from miners in the Eastern Region. The suspects, identified as Moses Tapiam, 43; Christopher Amakor, 29; Casimir Nunekpeku, 29; Wisdom Miwonku, 35; and Paul Agbahu, 53, were arrested on January 2, 2026, at Akwadum in the Abuakwa South Municipality.
The police stated that the suspects were dressed in security uniforms and claimed to be NAIMOS operatives from Accra. They were moving from one mining site to another, extorting money from miners under the guise of enforcing anti-galamsey operations. The suspects were arrested by a NAIMOS team while traveling in a Mitsubishi 4×4 pick-up vehicle with registration number GS 536–25.
The Eastern South Regional Police Command has cautioned the public, particularly individuals who impersonate security officers, to desist from such acts, noting that impersonation constitutes a criminal offense. The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations and will be arraigned in due course.
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has been intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the country. The arrest of these suspects is part of the government’s efforts to protect the environment and ensure responsible mining practices.
The police have assured the public that anyone found holding themselves out as security officials without authority will be arrested and prosecuted. The public is advised to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
