Oquaye Urges NPP Aspirants to Uphold Democratic Principles

Former Speaker of Parliament and founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Professor Mike Oquaye, has called on presidential aspirants to conduct themselves honourably in the party’s upcoming flagbearer contest. According to TV3 News, Oquaye emphasized the importance of fairness, unity, and respect for the party’s values throughout the electoral process.
Oquaye made the call at the signing of a peace pact by the five NPP presidential hopefuls ahead of the party’s primary scheduled for January 31, 2026. He stressed that past incidents of unfair practices, partiality, and extreme partisanship had negatively affected cohesion within the party.
The former Speaker warned that the party’s internal practices must abide by the tenets of the 1992 Constitution and democratic principles. He urged the aspirants to reject individuals who work against the interest of the NPP and to promote unity, accepting the processes and outcome of the election.
The NPP presidential primary will be contested by Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong. The aspirants have committed themselves to promoting unity and ensuring that their supporters refrain from acts that could cause violence or undermine the unity of the party.
The 1992 Constitution of Ghana requires that the internal organization of a political party shall conform to democratic principles and its actions and purposes shall not contravene or be inconsistent with the Constitution. Oquaye’s call is seen as a bid to ensure that the NPP adheres to these principles.
The NPP has a history of contributing significantly to Ghana’s democratic journey, and Oquaye’s statement is a reminder of the party’s responsibility to uphold democratic integrity.
