Vice President Inspects Avenor Collapse Rescue Operations

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Saturday, 7th June 2026, surveyed the wreckage of a collapsed structure at Avenor, joining Minister for the Interior Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak and the Greater Accra Regional Minister to evaluate the crisis response and interface with frontline rescue commanders.

According to briefings delivered by emergency response teams at the scene, two individuals had been extricated alive from the rubble while specialized units continued painstaking efforts to locate additional persons presumed trapped beneath the debris. The multi-agency operation, involving heavy equipment and canine search teams, remained active under challenging conditions as daylight broke over the densely populated Accra suburb.

According to Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, Government holds profound concern for all citizens imperiled by the tragedy, and she conveyed heartfelt sympathies to victims and their families enduring the anguish of uncertainty. She lauded the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the National Ambulance Service, and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly for their exemplary professionalism, operational discipline, and rapid deployment to the disaster epicenter.

According to officials on site, the Vice President reserved particular commendation for civilian volunteers and neighborhood residents whose alacrity in the immediate aftermath proved instrumental. Their initial efforts to assist trapped persons before the arrival of formal emergency contingents embodied communal solidarity and arguably improved survival prospects for those rescued.

According to urban development observers, structural collapses in Accra’s inner districts have reignited discourse on regulatory enforcement, building codes, and the proliferation of unauthorized construction. The Avenor incident adds urgency to calls for stringent inspection regimes and accountability within the built environment sector, as city authorities grapple with population density and ageing infrastructure.
