Tebas Demands Infantino Quit Over Football Changes

La Liga President Javier Tebas has launched an unprecedented broadside against FIFA President Gianni Infantino, calling for his immediate resignation and accusing him of orchestrating a systematic dismantling of the sport through unilateral policy shifts, commercial overreach, and governance overextension.

Speaking with uncharacteristic candor, Tebas lambasted a raft of recent FIFA initiatives that he contends have fractured the competitive integrity and calendar coherence of global football. His indictment centered on mandatory hydration breaks, prolonged halftime intervals, perceived preferential treatment in tournament hosting, and what he described as a reckless expansionist agenda that threatens to dilute the quality of the game.

According to Tebas, “he is destroying football with hydration breaks, extended halftimes, favours, and his 64-team World Cup plan.” The La Liga chief argued that such measures prioritize broadcast windows and commercial yield over player welfare and sporting merit, warning that fixture congestion and format inflation are already producing diminishing returns for athletes and supporters alike.

Football governance experts note that the rift underscores a deeper ideological schism between club-centric leagues and FIFA’s centralized authority. Tebas, a longstanding critic of international calendar reforms, maintains that domestic competitions bear the brunt of FIFA’s decisions without commensurate consultation, while leagues face escalating costs and player burnout. He further alleged that opaque decision-making has eroded trust among stakeholders who sustain the game’s economic ecosystem.

The controversy arrives at a pivotal juncture as FIFA advances proposals to enlarge its flagship tournament and recalibrate competition structures to accommodate broader global participation. Proponents view expansion as a democratizing force, while detractors, including several European leagues, caution that quantitative growth risks qualitative decline. The debate has intensified scrutiny of FIFA’s dual mandate to develop the game worldwide and to preserve its competitive essence.

With relations between FIFA and major leagues at their most acrimonious in recent memory, the call for resignation is unlikely to precipitate immediate change but will amplify pressure for reform and dialogue. The coming months will test whether football’s governing bodies can reconcile commercial imperatives with the preservation of the sport’s foundational principles.
