Prolonged Tongues

“For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him,
but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.” — 1 Corinthians 14:2 ESV.

Prayer in tongues is a gift God gave the Church to build us up from the inside out. Prolonged tongues means staying with it — not just a few seconds, but lingering in the Spirit until He has done His work in you. Paul said, “I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you” — 1 Corinthians 14:18 ESV.

And again, “The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself” — 1 Corinthians 14:4 ESV. When you yield your tongue to the Holy Spirit, you are praying mysteries that bypass your understanding and go straight to God. You are praying the will of God when you don’t have the words. “The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” — Romans 8:26 ESV.

Prolonged tongues strengthen your inner man. It charges you like a battery. “But you, beloved,
building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit” — Jude 1:20 ESV. It quiets the flesh, aligns your heart, and gives you fresh boldness for the day. The enemy hates it because he cannot understand it.

This is not about performance. It is about partnership with the Holy Spirit. He is the One who fills you and gives you the utterance. “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance” — Acts 2:4 ESV. Make room to linger. Find time to pray in the Spirit beyond your usual prayer list. Let the Spirit lead you. Stay until you sense peace, clarity, and strength rising in you.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, fill me afresh. Teach me to pray in tongues and to linger with You. Build me up in my faith as I yield my tongue to You. I choose to abide in Your presence until I am strengthened for what You have for me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
