Bawumia Emerges NPP Flagbearer with Decisive Win

In a landslide victory, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2028 presidential elections, securing 56.48% of the valid votes cast. The Electoral Commission (EC) declared Bawumia the winner of the party’s presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026.
According to the EC, Bawumia received 110,640 votes, surpassing the constitutional requirement of more than 50% to secure an outright victory. The results were announced at the NPP National Headquarters in Accra, with representatives of all contesting candidates appending their signatures to authenticate the outcome.
The victory marks a significant milestone for Bawumia, who has been a key figure in Ghana’s politics for several years. His win is seen as a reflection of his leadership, vision, and commitment to the development of Ghana. “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on his well-deserved victory,” said Ibrahim Baba Bukari, Bono East Regional Chairman of the NPP.
Bawumia’s opponents, including Kennedy Agyapong and Dr. Bryan Acheampong, conceded defeat, with Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum stating, “I congratulate Bawumia for his sweet victory”. The NPP has described the process as transparent, peaceful, and credible, reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy.
Bawumia’s victory sets the stage for the party’s preparations for the 2028 general elections. The NPP is expected to rally behind its new flagbearer as he leads the party into the next electoral contest.
